That’s Just Criminal podcast

Today, Vice Presidents of the Criminal Bar Association Annabel Cresswell and Sumudu Thode released the first two episodes of the That’s Just Criminal podcast, an insightful look behind the scenes of the criminal justice system, both in Aotearoa and overseas.

The first episode ‘Is silence golden? The dilemma of calling evidence’ features special guest, Wayne McKean, as they discuss and navigate the high-stakes decision-making process of clients’ giving evidence at trial. This episode offers a behind-the-scenes look at the strategies, risks, and real-world experiences that shape a defence lawyer's approach in the courtroom.

The second episode ‘Behind the Bar: How Lawyer X shook the justice system’ includes a rare interview with Rishi Nathwani SC and delves into the case of Lawyer X / Nicola Gobbo, the Victorian Barrister turned police informant - the fallout from her actions, the actions of the Police, and the resulting Royal Commission of Inquiry.

In addition to providing insight and infotainment for lawyers and the public, That’s Just Criminal aims to create a community for those working in criminal law.

Cresswell says: “Being a criminal and trial barrister can be a lonely time and what we want to do is create a community where we talk about those hard decisions in those tough times and how others in our role deal with them.”
